2026: 5 year update

Just a note to mention that I haven't forgotten about this. While it looks unlikely to be complete this year, the plan is to release the Wayfar MOO game code open source, along with some improvements to the hellcore fork it operates on. These steps are also needed to get the game back up and running anyway.  So far we have done the following:
  • Rebuild and docker-ize the MOO on modern ubuntu
  • Add objdef import/export, similar to mooR.  Objects can be edited as text files and then imported without manually programming via telnet.
  • Various improvements to hellcore: a library of more sophisticated noise functions for procedural generation, LLM interface, and modern email handling
  • Fixed almost all major in game systems that had logical issues - path finding, on demand rooms, blueprints, black markets, starships, wildlife, citizenry, have all received major foundation cleanups and fixes

What will be released on github:

Hellcore/wayfar code necessary to run a MOO with the game systems, including proc gen, travel, weaponry, etc.  All the game functionality allowing you to boot up, spawn a galaxy, and create your own game.

What may not be released on github:

The actual game content such as creatures, items, etc.

There is still a significant amount of work to do before it is ready so I don't want to overpromise, but fingers crossed for 2027!  Thanks to mrjohnson for some recent help on bouncing ideas around and testing.
